Steel shipments to the US rose by 4.8% m/m in June

In June 2026, US steelworks shipped 8.5 million short tonnes of steel. This is 4.8% higher than in May this year (8.14 million) and 8.7% higher than in June 2025 (7.85 million), according to a report by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

In total, for the first half of 2026, the volume of steel product shipments in the country reached 47.5 million short tonnes. Compared with the same period in 2025 (45.1 million short tonnes), this represents a 5.3% increase.

Breaking down the figures by product category for the first six months of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025, the following trends were recorded:

• Corrosion-resistant sheet and strip: up 14%;
• Hot-rolled sheet: up 8%;
• Cold-rolled sheet: volumes remained unchanged.

This positive trend demonstrates sustained demand from key consumer sectors and the continued strengthening of the US steel sector’s position.

As reported by GMK Center, total steel imports into the US in June 2026 amounted to 2.1 million short tonnes, with rolled steel imports totalling 1.46 million tonnes – down by 4.3% and 6.9% respectively compared with May of this year. The share of rolled steel imports in the US market in June is estimated at 17%, whilst for the first six months of 2026 it stands at around 16%.

Overall, since the start of the year, import figures have fallen significantly compared with the same period in 2025: total steel imports fell by 22.9%, whilst rolled steel imports fell by 24.5%.
