Cooling chamber successfully revamped at Cogne Acciai Speciali

Cogne Acciai Speciali awarded Danieli Service a modernization project for its plant in Aosta, Italy, to upgrade the cooling chamber of the continuous casting machine for special steel blooms.

The primary objective of this intervention was to improve machine efficiency and facilitate maintenance activities.

The scope of supply included the design and installation of a new stainless-steel cooling chamber in the caster’s mobile curved zone, fully covering the wet area affected by secondary spray cooling. The chamber was preassembled at Danieli workshops and partially delivered to the plant in a pre-mounted arrangement, enabling fast installation and minimizing on-site activities during the shutdown.

As part of the revamping, a new central supporting structure was installed to sustain all fixed curved sections of the caster. This structure integrates new roller modules, new hoods engineered to improve heat containment and simplify operation and maintenance. It also includes new extraction guides for all operational electromagnetic stirrers across the various casting lines.

By relocating all mechanical components outside the wet zone, the upgraded caster configuration significantly simplifies maintenance activities while improving component durability and extending service life. In addition, the support structure of the oscillating benches was optimized to enhance oscillation performance and overall casting stability.

The entire modernization was successfully executed during a four-week summer shutdown, ensuring seamless integration with existing equipment and rapid return to operation.
