Tata Steel’s steel production and shipments increased in India
Tata Steel released its provisional production and shipment figures for the second quarter of the 2026-2027 fiscal year on October 7. Crude steel production at its Indian operations increased by 8% quarter on quarter, driven by higher output at the Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar plants. Total crude steel production in the first half of the fiscal year increased by 10% year on year to 11.97 million mt.
Shipments in India increased by 15% quarter on quarter in the second quarter. The company stated that improvements in its product mix and stable demand across various market segments supported shipments despite seasonal rainfall. Total shipments in the first half increased by 8% year on year to 11.14 million mt.
Shipments in the automotive and special products segment reached a record level for the second quarter at approximately 1.1 million mt. Volumes in this segment increased by 19% year on year and 9% quarter on quarter. Higher output from the continuous annealing and galvanizing lines at Kalinganagar and the combined rolling mill at Jamshedpur supported growth.
The branded products and retail segment recorded quarterly record shipments of approximately 2.2 million mt. Tata Tiscon volumes increased by 7% quarter on quarter, while volumes of Tata Kosh, the company's galvanized steel brand, increased by 25%.
Volumes in the construction and solutions segment reached approximately 600,000 mt, with ready-to-use solutions recording 32% year-on-year growth. In the engineering and packaging segment, volumes increased by 12% quarter on quarter to approximately 400,000 mt, supported by higher sales to the oil and gas sector. The company also maintained growth in sales of cold-rolled and galvanized products, tubes, tinplate and wire. Volumes of color-coated products increased by 34% quarter on quarter, reaching a quarterly record.
At Tata Steel's Netherlands operations, liquid steel production reached approximately 1.52 million mt in the second quarter, while shipments totaled 1.30 million mt. The company stated that the Direct Sheet Plant, which resumed operations in August 2026, was operating at its rated capacity under the framework agreed with local regulatory authorities. First-half production in the Netherlands totaled 3.07 million mt, while shipments reached 2.70 million mt.
At its UK operations, second-quarter shipments totaled 380,000 mt. The company explained that inventory buildup across the country's supply chain ahead of the new safeguard measures implemented on July 1, 2026, affected shipments. The pickling line at the Llanwern plant was also reported to have ramped up to full capacity.
At its Thailand operations, saleable steel production totaled 320,000 mt in the second quarter, while shipments reached 310,000 mt. Shipments recorded a slight quarter-on-quarter decrease, mainly due to heavy rainfall in September.
