Hyundai Steel to unveil U.S. steel mill model at hydrogen expo

Hyundai Steel Co., South Korea's second-largest steelmaker, said Monday it will unveil a miniature model of its planned electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill in the United States at a hydrogen exhibition this week.

The model will be displayed at the Hyundai Motor Group booth during the World Hydrogen Expo 2025, which runs from Thursday to Sunday at the KINTEX exhibition center in Goyang, just north of Seoul, the company said in a press release.

Hyundai Steel said it will present detailed plans for the U.S. steel plant -- slated to begin operations in 2029 -- along with its mid- to long-term technology road map for transitioning to hydrogen-based steelmaking.

In March, the company announced a US$5.8 billion investment to build the 2.7 million-ton-per-year EAF steel mill in Louisiana by 2029, as part of Hyundai Motor Group's broader U.S. investment program, originally set at $21 billion and revised upward in August to $26 billion.

Hyundai Steel plans to supply automotive steel from the Louisiana plant for Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp.'s U.S.-produced strategic models, while also seeking supply opportunities with automakers in Latin America and Europe.

If completed, the Louisiana facility will mark Hyundai Steel's first overseas production site.
