Steel Imports Down 16.7% In September vs. August

Washington, D.C. – Based on final Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 1,560,000 net tons (NT) of steel in September 2025, including 1,184,000 net tons (NT) of finished steel (down 16.7% and 15.9%, respectively, vs. August 2025). Total and finished steel imports are down 8.9% and 12.5%, respectively, year-to-date vs. 2024. Over the 12-month period October 2024 to September 2025, total and finished steel imports are down 5.9% and 8.4%, respectively, vs. the prior 12-month period. Finished steel import market share was an estimated 14% in September and is estimated at 19% over the first nine months of 2025.

A key steel product with a significant import increase in September compared to August was line pipe (up 27%). Products with a significant increase in imports over the 12-month period October 2024 to September 2025 compared to the previous 12-month period include tin plate (up 45%), line pipe (up 14%) and wire rods (up 13%).

In September, the largest suppliers were Canada (310,000 NT, up 2% vs. August), South Korea (244,000 NT, up 38%), Brazil (175,000 NT, down 35%), Mexico (147,000 NT, down 25%) and Germany (98,000 NT, up 30%). Over the 12-month period October 2024 to September 2025, the largest suppliers were Canada (5,262,000 NT, down 21% vs, compared to the previous 12-months), Brazil (4,111,000 NT, down 9%), Mexico (3,336,000 NT, down 2%), South Korea (2,752,000 NT, down 3%) and Germany (1,220,000 NT, up 17%).
