Global steel production fell by 1.2% y/y in August

Global steel production in August 2026 fell by 1.2% year-on-year – to 144.2 million tonnes. This is shown by the World Steel Association’s global ranking of steel-producing countries (70).

Compared with the previous month, the figure fell by 3.3%.

Total steel production in the CIS countries plus Ukraine fell by 5.6% year-on-year and 6% month-on-month during the month, to 6.3 million tonnes. In August, Ukraine produced 277,000 tonnes of steel, which is 57.3% less year-on-year and 39.4% less than the previous month.

According to World Steel, the top ten steel-producing countries in August were:

• China — 74.6 million tonnes (-3.7% year-on-year);
• India — 14.8 million tonnes (+4.6%);
• USA — 7.3 million tonnes (+3%);
• Japan — 6.7 million tonnes (+0.4%);
• Russia — 5.5 million tonnes (-0.3%);
• South Korea — 5.4 million tonnes (+2.6%);
• Turkey — 3.4 million tonnes (-0.4%);
• Brazil — 2.7 million tonnes (-6.2%);
• Vietnam — 2.7 million tonnes (+36.4%);
• Germany — 2.6 million tonnes (+1.7%).

In the first eight months of 2026, global steel output reached 1.22 billion tonnes, which is 0.7% less than in the same period of 2025. In the CIS countries and Ukraine, 52 million tonnes of steel were produced during this period, which is 5.7% less year-on-year.

As reported by GMK Center, in 2025 global steel production fell by 2% year-on-year to 1.8 billion tonnes. Total steel production in the CIS countries plus Ukraine fell by 4.4% year-on-year last year to 81.3 million tonnes. China reduced output by 4.4% year-on-year (960.8 million tonnes), India increased it by 10.4% year-on-year (164.9 million tonnes), and the US by 3.1% year-on-year (82 million tonnes).
