Austria increased its crude steel production in August compared with the previous month, according to worldsteel data.
Output amounted to 657,236 tonnes, up 0.6% month-on-month but volumes were down by 2.1% year-on-year, Kallanish notes.
Austria remained 22nd in the ranking of top global steel producers in August, the data shows.
In January-August, the country produced 5.11 million tonnes of steel, versus 4.98mt in the first eight months of 2025, amid the overall EU and global downward trend.
Overall EU output fell 1% y-o-y to 8.89mt in August, while in January-August production was almost 84.4mt compared with 84.7mt in the first eight months of 2025.
Austrian steel producer Voestalpine continues to focus on value-added growth in high-yield processing segments.
It has said that the dry weather in Europe, which has caused the Danube River to fall to critical water levels, is not impacting its materials logistics (see Kallanish passim). Although voestalpine’s main mill in Linz is located on the river, its intake of material mostly takes place via land.
Previously, the company said it is planning a second electric arc furnace in Donawitz, in addition to the EAF that is due to start operations at the same site in just under a year.
