In August 2026, steel production in the country totalled 793,000 tonnes. This is 3.5% less than in the same period last year and significantly lower than July’s figure of 1.7 million tonnes. This was reported by SteelOrbis, citing data from the Italian Steel Federation (Federacciai).
Despite the decline in August, total steel production in Italy rose by 2.4% year-on-year – to 13.9 million tonnes in the first eight months of 2026.
In August, production of long steel products totalled 395,000 tonnes, which was 10.2% less than in August last year. However, for the period January–August, production of this category of steel products rose by 5.2% year-on-year – to 8.4 million tonnes.
Flat steel production in August showed positive growth, rising by 30.3% year-on-year – to 374,000 tonnes. Over the first eight months of the year, the figure fell by 2.4% year-on-year – to 5.8 million tonnes.
As reported by GMK Center, at the end of 2025, Italy increased its steel production by 3.6% compared with 2024, reaching 20.7 million tonnes. Production of flat steel products rose by 3.8% last year compared with 2024 — to 8.9 million tonnes — whilst production of long steel products increased by 5.5% year-on-year, to 12.3 million tonnes.
It should be noted that the Milan Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal lodged by the operator, Acciaierie d’Italia, upholding the decision to shut down and reclaim the hot zone of the former Ilva steelworks in Taranto.
This court ruling dealt a significant blow to the plans of Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni’s government, which had been attempting to keep the country’s largest steelworks in operation whilst a new investor was sought. The plant is of strategic importance to the country’s industry, supplying raw materials to the construction and automotive sectors.
