France announces bonus for EVs with European batteries

The French government has announced an additional bonus of €1,000 ($1,170) for the purchase of electric vehicles assembled in Europe, equipped with a European battery, Kallanish learns.

Paris already offers the so-called ecological bonus of up to €4,200 for eligible EVs, subject to household income. The scheme initially offered a bonus of up to €7,000 but was slashed by nearly half last December. Since July 2025, the scheme has been financed through the energy saving certificates (CEE) scheme, which requires energy suppliers to buy energy credits to meet their green targets.

The new bonus will be in addition to the ecological bonus, the ministry for ecological transition says in a statement.

“With this €1,000 increase in the ecological bonus, we are promoting electric vehicles whose batteries are produced in Europe and whose manufacturing emits fewer greenhouse gases,” comments Agnès Pannier-Runacher, ecological transition minister. “It is a win-win measure for purchasing power, the climate and industry. It makes electric cars more accessible to French people, while supporting industry and employment.”

The ministry says it will publish a list of eligible vehicles on its website in the coming days.

In July, the government announced the return of the social leasing scheme for electric cars, which was discontinued last February after less than two months. With a budget of around €370 million, the initiative facilitates low-income households to lease private cars for at least three years. At least 50,000 EVs will be subsidised under this, with subsidies capped at €7,000 per car.

Rental companies have until 19 September to submit their expressions of interest.
