Global steel production in 2025 decreased by 2% y/y


Global steel production in 2025 decreased by 2% year-on-year – to 1.8 billion tonnes. This is evidenced by the World Steel Association’s global ranking of steel-producing countries (70).

Total steel production in the CIS countries + Ukraine fell by 4.4% year-on-year – to 81.3 million tonnes in 2025, with Ukraine’s production falling by 2.2% year-on-year – to 7.41 million tonnes.

According to World Steel, the top ten steel-producing countries last year were:

  • China – 960.8 million tonnes (-4.4% y/y);
  • India – 164.9 million tonnes (+10.4%);
  • USA – 82 million tonnes (+3.1%);
  • Japan – 80.7 million tonnes (-4%);
  • Russia – 67.8 million tonnes (-4.5%);
  • South Korea – 61.9 million tonnes (-2.8%);
  • Turkey – 38.1 million tonnes (+3.3%);
  • Germany – 34.1 million tonnes (-8.6%);
  • Brazil – 33.3 million tonnes (-1.6%);
  • Iran – 31.8 million tonnes (+1.4%).

In December last year, global steel production fell by 3.7% compared to the same period in 2024, to 139.6 million tonnes. In the CIS countries and Ukraine, it decreased by 2.7% year-on-year, to 6.9 million tonnes.
