Kern County Board Gives Approval to California Rebar Mill

The Kern County Board of Supervisors in California have approved plans from Pacific Steel Group to build a rebar mill and scrap metal recycling facility. It will become the first new steel mill in California in more than 50 years.

“Today not a pound of steel is manufactured in the state of California,” said Mark Olson, the vice president of mill operations for Pacific Steel Group, noting that none of that steel is produced locally.

The $540 billion project in Mojave in Eastern Kern County will result in a nearly 500,000-square-foot project to produce approximately 380,000 tons of rebar annually.
