SteelPrices Market Intelligence

Tata Steel's Q2 operating data show a clear geographic split. India delivered stronger production and sales volumes as Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar output increased and higher-value automotive, branded and downstream products reached record levels. European volumes moved in the opposite direction, with Netherlands deliveries lower and UK deliveries affected by pre-July trade-measure inventory buildup. The mix matters: Tata Steel reports crude steel production in India, liquid steel in the Netherlands and saleable steel in Thailand, so those production figures should not be treated as identical measures when comparing regions.

Tata Steel reported provisional production and delivery volumes for the second quarter of fiscal 2026/27 on October 7, 2026.

Crude steel production at Tata Steel India reached 6.21 million tons, increasing 8% from the previous quarter and 10% year over year.

Tata Steel attributed the higher output primarily to increased production at its Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar operations.

India deliveries totaled 5.97 million tons, up 15% quarter over quarter and 7% year over year.

The company said the increase was supported by an improved product mix and stable demand across market segments despite seasonal rainfall.

India First-Half Steel Production Reaches 11.97 Million Tons

Tata Steel India's crude steel production totaled 11.97 million tons in the first half of FY2026/27, up 10% year over year from 10.87 million tons.

First-half deliveries rose 8% year over year to 11.14 million tons, compared with 10.30 million tons in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

The stronger first-half volumes come as India continues to expand its steel industry. SteelPrices has previously reported that the country's long-term strategy targets substantially higher domestic capacity: India Targets 600 Million Tonnes of Steel Capacity by 2047 .

Automotive Steel Deliveries Hit Record Q2 Level

Tata Steel's Automotive & Special Products business achieved its highest-ever second-quarter volume at approximately 1.1 million tons.

Deliveries increased 9% quarter over quarter and 19% year over year.

Tata Steel attributed the increase to the ramp-up of the continuous annealing and galvanizing lines at Kalinganagar and the combined rolling mill at Jamshedpur.

The Jamshedpur operation has also undergone other downstream and rolling upgrades. SteelPrices previously reported on the modernisation of Tata Steel's CSP plant: Tata Steel and SMS Group Complete Jamshedpur CSP Upgrade .

Branded and Retail Steel Deliveries Reach Quarterly Record

Tata Steel's Branded Products & Retail segment recorded its highest-ever quarterly deliveries at approximately 2.2 million tons.

Tata Tiscon achieved a quarterly record and increased volumes by 7% from Q1.

Tata Kosh, the company's galvanized steel brand, increased volumes by 25% quarter over quarter.

Downstream Steel Products Continue to Grow

Tata Steel said sales across several downstream categories continued to expand during the quarter, including cold-rolled steel, galvanized products, tubes, tinplate and wire.

Its Colors business, which includes color-coated products, achieved its highest-ever quarterly volume, with deliveries increasing 34% quarter over quarter.

Engineering & Packaging volumes increased 12% from the previous quarter to approximately 0.4 million tons, supported by higher sales to the oil and gas sector.

Tata Steel also reported gross merchandise value of Rs 2,860 crore across its Tata Steel Aashiyana and DigECA e-commerce platforms, up 30% quarter over quarter.

SteelPrices product-mix read: The Q2 increase was not limited to crude steel tonnage. Record or higher volumes across automotive, branded retail and coated products indicate that Tata Steel's India growth also included downstream and value-added categories. That distinction matters because higher crude steel production alone would not establish an improvement in product mix.

Netherlands Liquid Steel Output Holds at 1.52 Million Tons

Tata Steel Netherlands produced approximately 1.52 million tons of liquid steel during Q2FY27 and recorded deliveries of approximately 1.30 million tons.

That compares with 1.55 million tons of production and 1.40 million tons of deliveries in the first quarter.

On a first-half basis, Netherlands liquid steel production totaled 3.07 million tons, while deliveries reached 2.70 million tons.

The Direct Sheet Plant, which had been shut earlier in 2026, restarted in August and was operating at rated capacity under the framework agreed with local regulatory authorities, Tata Steel said.

SteelPrices production-basis note: Tata Steel reports the Netherlands figure as liquid steel production. It should not be relabeled as crude steel production merely to make it directly comparable with the India figures.

UK Deliveries Fall to 380,000 Tons

Tata Steel UK recorded second-quarter deliveries of 0.38 million tons, down from 0.48 million tons in the first quarter.

Tata Steel said deliveries were affected by inventory buildup across the UK steel supply chain ahead of the implementation of the country's new steel trade measure on July 1, 2026.

The UK government replaced the previous steel safeguard with a new tariff-rate quota system from July 1. Overall tariff-free import quotas were reduced substantially, while steel imported above the applicable quotas became subject to a 50% tariff.

Tata Steel also said production at the Llanwern pickling line had been fully ramped up.

SteelPrices UK note: Tata Steel UK no longer reports primary steel production in these quarterly operating figures because the business is serving customers through downstream processing of purchased substrate. The 0.38 million-ton figure is a delivery volume, not UK crude steel production.

Thailand Deliveries Edge Lower During Heavy September Rains

Tata Steel Thailand produced 0.32 million tons of saleable steel during the second quarter.

Deliveries totaled 0.31 million tons, compared with 0.33 million tons in the first quarter.

Tata Steel attributed the modest sequential decline primarily to heavy rainfall in September.

Thailand0.32M t0.31M tSaleable steel
SteelPrices methodology note: Tata Steel's regional production figures use different definitions: crude steel for India, liquid steel for the Netherlands and saleable steel for Thailand. UK volumes currently reflect deliveries from downstream processing. The regional production figures should therefore not be simply added and described as one directly comparable crude steel production total.

What Do Tata Steel's Q2 Results Show?

The provisional operating data show Tata Steel's Indian business increasing both crude steel production and deliveries during the quarter, with several downstream and value-added product segments reaching record volumes.

The company's European operations showed a different pattern. Netherlands output remained relatively stable sequentially but deliveries declined, while UK deliveries were lower amid supply-chain inventory effects linked to the July trade-policy change.

Thailand volumes also moved slightly lower during the quarter, with Tata Steel citing September rainfall as the primary reason for softer deliveries.

Tata Steel's Q2 figures are provisional operating volumes and do not by themselves establish changes in revenue, margins or profitability. Those measures require the company's financial results.
