The US saw a 3.4% m/m increase in steel imports in August


In August this year, the US saw its total steel imports rise by 3.4% compared with the previous month, reaching 2.34 million short tonnes. Compared with August 2026, the figure fell by 15.1%. This was reported by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

In particular, imports of rolled steel products for the period totalled 1.6 million short tonnes of the total volume, rising by 2.2% month-on-month, but falling by 18.5% year-on-year.

The market share of rolled steel imports in August is estimated to have stood at 17.5%, and at 16% for the first eight months of 2026.

The main product categories for which imports rose significantly in August compared with July are hot-rolled sheet and coil, and hot-dip galvanised sheets and strips.

The largest exporters of steel to the US in August were:

  • South Korea — 407,000 short tonnes (-27% compared with June);
  • Canada — 296,000 tonnes (+6%);
  • Brazil — 351,000 tonnes (+39%);
  • Mexico — 254,000 tonnes (+32%);
  • Vietnam — 159,000 tonnes (+4%).

As a reminder, in July 2026, US steelworks shipped 8.22 million short tonnes of steel. This is 3.7% less than in June. Over the first seven months of the year, the figure rose by 5.3% year-on-year.

As reported by GMK Center, in July this year the United States imported a total of 2.26 million short tonnes of steel. In particular, imports of rolled steel amounted to 1.56 million tonnes. Compared with June 2026, these figures rose by 7.4% and 6.3% respectively.
