Turkey's steel imports & exports increased in Jan-Aug y-o-y

According to data from the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD), Turkey imported 12.6 million tons of steel in the first eight months of 2025, representing a 17.9% year-on-year increase. The import volume in August was 1.6 million tons, an 18.6% increase compared to the same month last year.

Turkey exported 10 million tons of steel in the first eight months of the year, marking a 12.8% increase. In August alone, the export volume reached 1.2 million tons, representing a year-on-year growth of 6.8%.

To prevent pressure on the domestic industry caused by the growth of imports, Turkey requires that 25% of steel exports be sourced domestically. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce of Turkey considers maintaining a balanced foreign trade account as a primary future objective. They aim to establish a current account balance, reduce the deficit, and minimize the external dependence of import and export organizations—especially those making export commitments under intellectual property rights—on the supply of inputs.
