The US Department of Commerce has launched a public consultation process regarding the extension of Section 232 tariffs to 14 additional derived products, in particular those containing steel. This is stated in a notice published in the Federal Register.
The list includes a number of items, such as steel containers filled with certain chemicals (e.g. propane or oxygen), fire extinguishers, agricultural trailers, parts for hydraulic engines and motors, aluminium powder, and so on.
The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) is also proposing to include mobile lifting frames, gantry cranes and certain self-propelled cranes that may be relevant to industrial supply chains.
Most goods on the proposed list will be subject to a 25% tariff, although the rate will differ for a number of categories.
For example, agricultural trailers and semi-trailers with automatic loading or unloading are subject to a 15% duty. Rates for self-propelled cranes, mobile lifting frames and reloaders, in particular, will depend on the country of origin, as they are a type of mobile industrial equipment. Steel containers will be subject to a duty of 50% of the value of the container itself, rather than its contents.
Comments must be submitted by 27 August this year.
It should be noted that steel imports into the US fell by 4.3% month-on-month in June, whilst the figure has fallen by 22.9% year-on-year since the start of 2026.
